Bethesda Orphanage > Local Foster Care

Bethesda Orphanage is based in the rural sout-east of Nigeria, Igede, close to Elim. It all started out in the late seventies with the Dutch Sister Diny, who noticed that many young children were literally being thrown away or not being taking care of. Bethesda Orphanage took these deprived children in and Nigerian women were trained to take care of them. Lately Bethesda has proactively turned their program towards community based care for (half)orphans. Now, family members are trained to take care of these children and Bethesda monitores the childs progression and environment and provides additional nutrition when needed.

Bethesda feels that since they have made such a change in their program, there is a need to set up a PR program. It turns out that many people in the area think that they have given up on orpan care since they are not taking children in anymore. That’s why they want to clearly reprofile themselves as the one to go to when it comes to orphan care. Besides, Bethesda wants to provide communities and caretakers with information on health, nutrition and life skills, which also falls under the PR program. Jars of Clay Foundation provides Bethesda with the financial and practical means for setting up their PR department.
